Configuring ReflectionX

(Click on the images to see full-size versions).

1. Start ReflectionX by choosing Start->Programs->Reflection->ReflectionX.

2. Select Settings->Keyboard and unselect the option that says "Backspace sends delete".

Close the settings window.

3. Select the command towards the bottom of the scrolling list at the left that says XDMCP Direct to... and enter "cerebus.cshl.org" in the field on the right labeled Host name. This creates a command that will log you into Cerebus using the X Display Manager Control Protocol.

When ready, push the Connect button.

4. A forbidding prompt with the Sun logo will prompt you to log in. Give your Cerebus login name and password.

5. The first time you do this, you will be prompted to select a desktop manager.

You want to choose the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). Trust me.

6. The CDE desktop is a poor imitation of the Macintosh/Windows environment. Some people like it.

7. To open a terminal (command shell), press the arrow above the document icon (left-hand side of tool window) and choose "terminal".

8. You can open the XEmacs editor by typing either emacs & or xemacs & at the command prompt. This provides a (relatively) nice environment for program editing.

9. pico is easier to learn but less powerful. Start it with the pico command.

There's also an unnamed graphical editor available in the document menu of the toolbar.

10. Be sure to save ReflectionX before you quit. The next time you run it, it will remember that you want to be connected to Cerebus, and you will be able to reconnect by clicking the "connect" button.
